What it means

A label rather than a standard

Altcoin does not identify a technical architecture, investment category or quality threshold. Assets described this way can use independent networks or existing token platforms, and can have very different governance and economic designs.

Describe the actual asset

For payment or technical documentation, name the coin or token and its network instead of relying on altcoin. Check the issuer or protocol, asset identifier, liquidity, custody and transfer requirements separately. A familiar category name does not establish compatibility with a payment service or wallet.

Related concepts

Cryptocurrency, Bitcoin, Stablecoin.

In practice

A concrete example

A developer replaces “send an altcoin” in a payment specification with the exact supported asset identifier and network.

Technical notes & boundaries

Some speakers exclude particular large assets or stablecoins from this label. State the intended scope; do not present the term as a regulated asset class.
