What it means
Token ownership and other rights
An NFT can represent a collectible, membership credential or reference to another item. The token’s ownership record and metadata do not automatically transfer copyright, guarantee storage of associated media or establish legal ownership of a physical object.
Using NFTs for access
An application can check a token holding before granting access, but it must define eligible contracts, networks, ownership checks and what happens after a transfer. Technical standards and the project’s actual terms determine the experience; royalties and access rules are not universally enforced across marketplaces.
Related concepts
In practice
A concrete example
A membership site checks ownership of a specified NFT contract, while its membership terms separately describe the benefits and transfer rules.
Technical notes & boundaries
Evaluate contract permissions, metadata hosting, licenses and revocation rules. A unique token is not proof that the linked media is unique or authentic.
