On October 23, 2026, the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission published the Division of Examinations’ fiscal 2027 priorities. For the digital asset industry, the notable point is its attention to tokenization and changing market infrastructure. The document describes where examination staff expect to focus; it does not create a new rule or impose a new requirement.

Where tokenization appears

The Division says reviews of clearing agencies will cover high-risk operations including tokenization, alongside default management, recovery and securities lending. For entities subject to Regulation Systems Compliance and Integrity (Reg SCI), examiners will also consider trends such as tokenized securities, extended trading hours and reliance on cloud vendors. These are specific market-infrastructure priorities, not a blanket announcement about all cryptocurrencies or payment providers.

Other examination priorities

The SEC also highlights investment adviser conflicts and compliance programs, retail sales of complex products, broker-dealer financial responsibility and anti-money-laundering controls, and operational resilience. In its technology section, the Division describes reviews of cybersecurity, customer-data safeguards, automated investment tools and the use of advanced technology in regulated firms’ operations.

What firms should take from the release

A firm should first determine whether it is an SEC registrant and which of the listed activities apply to it. Clearing agencies and Reg SCI entities working with tokenized securities have more direct reasons to review the relevant sections. A merchant accepting crypto payments is not automatically subject to these examination priorities merely because it handles digital assets.

The priorities are a risk-based examination plan, not an exhaustive checklist. The Division says it may change its focus as markets and risks evolve. Firms should read the full report and assess their existing obligations in their own regulatory context before changing controls.
