Chargeback

A reversal process associated with a cardholder’s dispute through the card issuer and card-payment framework, rather than an ordinary merchant-initiated refund.

What it means

A defined dispute process

Card disputes can involve provisional debits, evidence, deadlines and a final outcome under the applicable scheme and provider rules. The merchant’s refund policy does not alone determine how a cardholder dispute is handled.

Do not generalize to every rail

A direct blockchain transfer does not acquire a card-network chargeback mechanism merely because it pays for a purchase. Customers can still have contractual rights, legal claims or provider dispute processes. Where card funding or an intermediary is involved, those additional arrangements must be reviewed separately.

Related concepts

Refund, Payment reconciliation, Payment service provider.

In practice

A concrete example

A merchant responds to a card dispute through its provider’s evidence workflow and checks for an existing refund to avoid a duplicate return of value.

Technical notes & boundaries

“No native card chargeback” does not mean “no customer rights” or “no fraud risk.” A chargeback and a merchant refund are separate processes.
