What it means

A separate operation

A refund can have its own identifier, status and failure conditions. Depending on the payment method, it may use the original payment rail or require a separate transfer. Returning cryptocurrency is not the same as deleting an already accepted blockchain transaction.

Handle uncertain results

A timeout after requesting a refund does not establish whether the remote operation occurred. Follow the provider’s documented idempotency, lookup and reconciliation process before retrying. Keep the relationship to the original sale and define amount, currency, destination and fee treatment.

Related concepts

Chargeback, Idempotency, Payment reconciliation.

In practice

A concrete example

After a refund request times out, an integration checks the original refund operation instead of immediately submitting a new refund with a fresh identity.

Technical notes & boundaries

A refund differs from a chargeback. Depending on the payment method and timing, a refund may be processed as a reversal; provider terminology and lifecycle rules apply.
