What it means
Shares and underlying holdings
An investor buys a fund share rather than directly holding each underlying asset in a personal account. The portfolio, strategy, fees and risk disclosures define the investment. A share’s market trading price and the value of the underlying portfolio are related but not identical concepts.
Names can be misleading
Products traded on exchanges use different legal structures. Not every product marketed with a similar label is an ETF under the same regulatory framework. If a product references a cryptoasset, holding its shares is also different from controlling that asset in a blockchain wallet.

In practice
A concrete example
