Also known as gas fees

What it means

Units and price

Gas measures work, while a gas price expresses the cost per unit. On Ethereum, the charged execution fee depends on gas used and applicable fee components. A transaction’s limit or maximum price is not necessarily the final amount charged.

What customers pay

The application should separate network execution costs from gateway charges, exchange spreads and withdrawal fees. Layer 2 systems may have additional data-related fee components. Sponsorship can change who pays without eliminating the underlying expense. Quotes can change as network conditions and transaction complexity change.

In practice

A concrete example

A token checkout shows a network-fee estimate separately from the order amount and the payment service’s own fee.

Technical notes & boundaries

A failed execution can still consume paid gas. Fee calculations must identify the chain and transaction type rather than applying one formula to every network.
