What it means

A specific legal framework

HIPAA is US legislation, not a worldwide label for every medical data rule. Its privacy and security requirements have defined scopes. Whether an organization or relationship is covered depends on the relevant facts and applicable rules.

Payment design and health information

Healthcare payment systems should distinguish billing information, clinical records and information transmitted to external services. Putting sensitive health details into public blockchain data can create exposure that a payment label does not solve. A service claiming to accept crypto does not thereby establish HIPAA compliance.

Related concepts

PCI DSS, Key management, Invoice.

In practice

A concrete example

A practice separates a payment reference from clinical notes and reviews which information, if any, is sent to each payment service.
