HTTP caching

The controlled storage and reuse of HTTP responses according to freshness, validation and cache-control rules.

Development & integrationintermediateSources checked

What it means

Reduce repeated work

A cache can reuse a suitable representation instead of contacting the origin for every request. Freshness and validation rules determine when stored information can be served or must be checked again. Not every response is eligible for reuse.

Use current payment state carefully

Caching public reference data can be different from caching customer-specific or changing payment status. Choose controls that respect authorization and the consequences of stale information. A client should not fulfil an order solely because an old cached representation appears to indicate a successful payment.

Related concepts

REST API, Application programming interface, Payment monitoring.

In practice

A concrete example

A service caches public asset reference data while applying separate freshness and access rules to individual payment records.

Technical notes & boundaries

Caching is not the same as persistent storage, backup or guaranteed consistency. Shared-cache behavior and private responses require explicit controls.
