What it means

Layered controls

Businesses may combine authentication, request validation, access permissions, risk signals and manual investigation. A provider’s fraud score is an input to a policy, not a certainty about a person or transaction.

Balance outcomes and evidence

Rules should consider both missed fraud and incorrectly blocked legitimate activity. Review feedback, disputes and operational evidence without assuming that one signal explains every case. In crypto integrations, confirming a transfer’s existence is different from verifying the sender’s notification or the commercial legitimacy of the underlying order.

Related concepts

In practice

A concrete example

A merchant investigates an unusual order using relevant evidence while independently verifying the payment event’s authenticity and accepted status.

Technical notes & boundaries

No fraud tool guarantees zero fraud or removes customer rights. Risk scoring, KYC, webhook verification and card chargebacks address different parts of the problem.
