What it means

Programmable account behavior

Depending on the account implementation, features can include recovery rules, multiple approvers, batched actions and gas sponsorship. The account’s code and configuration determine which features actually exist.

A concept with multiple implementations

ERC-4337 is one Ethereum ecosystem approach to account abstraction. It defines UserOperations and an EntryPoint-based execution flow. Other mechanisms and account designs also exist, so account abstraction should not be treated as another name for one standard or as a guarantee that every wallet supports sponsored payments.

Related concepts

ERC-4337, Paymaster, Multi-signature wallet, Cryptocurrency wallet.

In practice

A concrete example

A merchant wallet can require additional approval above a spending threshold if its account implementation provides that rule.

Technical notes & boundaries

Recovery and sponsorship are optional capabilities, not automatic protections. Inspect account permissions, upgradeability and the exact supported standard version.
